Letting Satan have his freedom but set under strict limits by God fits in pretty well with the first few chapters of the book of Job. Reading those might give you some additional inspiration of how you would like to handle Satan's character. In those chapters, we see Satan is summoned before God with all the other angels, and God gives him the authority to destroy everything around Job as long as he doesn't physically kill Job.
